My aunt took a deep breath before continuing.

“Jen, I knew Sandra was obsessed with your mother’s crystal set. Every time she came over, she’d stare at it and make comments about how ‘overrated’ it was. I had a feeling she’d eventually try to destroy it.”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

“A few months ago, while you were busy with wedding planning, I asked to borrow the crystal set. I secretly took every original piece and stored it safely in my house. Then I found an inexpensive vintage crystal set that looked almost identical and put it back in the cabinet.”

I was speechless.

“You mean…”

“The pieces Sandra smashed weren’t your mother’s.”

For the first time since seeing the broken glass, I smiled through my tears.

“But how did you know she’d do something like that?”

“Because jealousy doesn’t stay hidden forever,” Aunt Marlene replied. “Sandra couldn’t stand that your mother was still part of your life.”

The next morning, my aunt came over carrying several carefully wrapped boxes. Inside was every single piece of my mother’s real crystal set, sparkling exactly as I remembered.

My dad arrived shortly afterward. Sandra immediately started her act.

“It was a terrible accident,” she said dramatically. “I feel awful.”

My aunt calmly placed one of the real crystal glasses on the table.

Sandra’s face instantly lost all color.

“What… what’s that?”

“The real crystal set,” Aunt Marlene answered. “The one you thought you destroyed.”

Silence filled the room.

My dad looked confused.

Sandra stumbled over her words.

“I… I don’t understand.”

“You don’t have to,” my aunt said. “The only thing that matters is that we know you lied.”

My dad turned to Sandra.

“So it wasn’t an accident?”

The smirk she’d worn days earlier disappeared completely.

My aunt then explained everything—how she’d suspected Sandra’s jealousy months ago and quietly replaced the original set with a similar-looking one for safekeeping.

My dad was devastated.

For years he had defended Sandra whenever I complained about the subtle insults toward my mother’s memory. Now he finally saw the truth.

Sandra admitted she had broken the set on purpose because she wanted me to “move on” and stop living in my mother’s shadow.

That confession changed everything.

Within weeks, my dad asked Sandra to move out, and eventually they divorced.

On my wedding day, my mother’s real crystal set sat proudly on the reception table.

Each guest raised a glass in her memory.

As I looked at the sparkling crystal, I knew Sandra had failed.

She hadn’t erased my mother’s legacy.
